Summary of program and its objectives:

The Retirement and Ageing division at the Brotherhood of St Laurence provides residential aged care,

independent living accommodation for people on low incomes, in home care home based and day and respite services for older people and people with disabilities.

The Retirement and Ageing and Disability Strategic Plan 2015-2020 clusters around seven strategic priorities that will guide our work over the next five years:

  • a body of reliable knowledge to inform policy and practice

The Brotherhood aims to be a leader in community care in Victoria, not only in the provision of quality services but also undertaking research, policy development and advocating on behalf of our consumers and the sector. At the Brotherhood the focus is enabling consumers to flourish. Our service model is based on the Enhancing Capabilities Approach which ensures that residents/ consumers experience a trusting environment that provides opportunities and choices that enable them to live lives they value. This encompasses valuing diversity including individual cultural preferences, sexual orientation and gender identity. This position provides professional person centred care and appropriate support to maximise consumer independence and autonomy.

Day and Respite Programs of the division provides high quality flexible services that assist older people, people who have a disability and carers to access and participate in community life. Priority is given to those who are socially isolated.

Main responsibilities of the role:

The Cook is responsible for menu planning, preparing, cooking and serving nourishing, palatable and attractive meals for clients of Day and Respite Programs. Working with the Program Coordinator, this position ensures that the food safety and kitchen hygiene complies with the legislative and Occupational Health and Safety requirements at all times.

To meet the selection criteria, candidates will require:

Essential

  • Qualification in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery) or other relevant qualification along with experience in a similar position
  • Current Food Safety Supervisor certification
  • Knowledge and experience with special dietary and nutritional requirements including medical conditions, allergies etc. of older people.
  • Knowledge of legislative requirements including Occupational Health & Safety and Food Safety Standards.
  • Proven ability to work with minimal supervision and as an effective team member to achieve objectives
  • Well-developed organisational and time management skills to plan own workload and meet deadlines
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Understanding of and empathy with the values and ideals of the Brotherhood.

This is a part time position working 10.5 hours per week on a 12 month maximum term contract.

Salary will be in the range of $53,004.05 to $57,708.76 pro rata per annum based on skills and experience plus superannuation. Attractive salary packaging provisions are available to increase take home pay.
