Rylands of Hawthorn is a magnificent independent living environment that provides our residents with the very best in service, amenities and luxury living. Our facility provides the convenience of a central location plus the benefit of club-like services in a relaxed atmosphere. At Rylands, service is our mantra, and our delightful staff are ready to assist the residents with any request, at any time.

We are currently looking to appoint a fully qualified Chef to provide our residents, their family and guests with a variety of high-quality menu offerings covering both lunch and dinner services, catering for functions and special themed events. Our food service covers either set menu service, buffets, cocktail receptions and evening a la carte, and are all provided for in our exquisite private dining restaurant or by pre-prepared meals that are delivered to our resident’s doors.

Reporting to our Senior Manager, our Chef will ensure our residents are kept satisfied and happy with a variety of quality home style meals, ensuring meals are prepared to cater to individual resident dietary requirements, together with providing exceptional function and catering experiences.

It is essential candidates considering this role have experience with:

  • Menu planning and recipe development
  • Knowledge of special diets and diet requirements such as allergies/intolerances, supplements and texture modified foods
  • Managing food costs within budget, performing stock takes and managing the ordering process
  • Maintaining and building supplier relationships
  • Maintain high standards of food preparation, presentation and cooking techniques in accordance with food safety legislation
  • Adhere to OSH requirements, including stringent cleaning schedules, documentation requirements and perform regular audits
  • Lead, manage and motivate a small team to provide outstanding customer service and quality food for our residents
  • Ensure the team comply with strict safety and hygiene standards required in retirement living.
  • Rylands of Hawthorn is an extremely social environment and the ability to cater for a range of functions and special themed events is essential. Daily covers vary from as low as 20 to over 150.

There is some flexibility with hours available and the benefit of limited weekend work and early evening finishes (usually no later than 8pm).

This role is 'hands on' which may require you to work as part of the small team, undertaking other duties as business demands require.

Minimum requirements are:

  • Trade qualified Chef
  • 2 years + experience in a commercial kitchen
  • Previous experience in effectively managing food costs and building and maintaining supplier relationships
  • Be enthusiastic and take pride in delivering the best possible service and quality food for our residents
  • Have excellent time management, organisational and communication skills
  • Must be flexible, reliable and self-motivated
  • Be a confident team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have a passion for providing outstanding and nutritious home cooked meals for our residents.
  • Barista skills would be advantageous
  • Police Check clearance essential
